1. In what specific ways are we in the communication business?
We have to communicate the Gospel and Christian truth. We are in the Good News business. Almost all of our work is done by speaking to people. Much of our work is done through private conversation with people. We have to answer questions and persuade people of right courses of action.
2. What single influence or power has the greatest negative effect on our communication?
Sin entered the world and man could no longer speak to God or speak in proper ways to one another. Sin distorts our communication.
3. What is the first principle of good communication?
Good communication takes hard work and conscientious effort. One has to want to communicate well.

Discuss It

  1. Which proverb regarding speech has been most helpful to you in improving your communication skills?
  2. Why do you think the most frequently quoted proverbs concern speech?

Apply It

  1. Read through the Book of Proverbs and list every proverb that addresses good speech and unhealthy speech. Put these proverbs into general categories, such as “Gentle speech,” “Angry words,” or “Wise speech" versus "foolish words.” This is a big assignment but it is worth the effort.
