Contemplate these questions, then click on each question to see the answer.
1. Aside from shepherding the flock themselves, what should a key role of the elders be?
Elders should push ministry outward, meaning that they should encourage other members of the church to serve one another. The elders should look for people who are gifted in various areas and encourage those people to utilize those gifts.
2. What does the speaker say is the key reason behind the grim statistics about pastoral burnout?
Their ecclesiology is wrong. One group of elders, let alone one pastor, cannot do all of the shepherding that needs to be done in a church. It is impossible!

Discuss It

  1. What do you think the speaker means by “leading from behind?” What does this look like when put into action?
  2. What, in your opinion, keeps elders pushing the ministry outward?

Apply It

  1. Does your group of elders “collect ministry” or push it outward? Are there ways that you can encourage more people in the congregation to participate and take initiative in ministry so that the elders are not overburdened?
  2. Talk to an elder from another church and ask what are they doing to push ministry outward? If you are not currently an elder, ask you own elders this question. What is their response?
