Remember It

Contemplate these questions, then click on each question to see the answer.
1. How many times is the word "deacon" used in the NT and in how many passages? Which ones?
Five times in two passages (Phil 1:1 and 1 Timothy 3:8-13).
2. The qualifications for deacons are strikingly like what other office of the church?
3. What is the dilema we face concerning the NT teaching about deaons?
There are very few references to deacons, no clear job descriptions, they are not appointed.

Discuss It

  1. What has been your understanding about the role and functioning of deacons in the local church?
  2. Paul and Barnabas appointed elders, but not deacons in the new churches on their first missionary tour. What do you think would be the problem with appointing deacons in the new churches before appointing elders?

Apply It

  1. Find out from the elders and/or deacons of your church whether there is a written policy on the role of deacons in your church and how men become deacons. Is it written down? If so, get a copy and study it, and compare it with the Scripture that has been studied so far on this topic.
