Contemplate these questions, then click on each question to see the answer.
1. What does the expression "people come with bleeding hearts" mean?
People have deep needs that can be met only by Christ and they come to church to have those needs met.
2. When can an elder on his own be fully competent to undertake the role he is called to do?
Never. He can only be competent as he depends on the grace of God.
3. Provide the references where spiritual gifts are taught in the scriptures?
Rom. 12, 1 Cor. 12, 1 Cor. 14, Eph. 4, 1 Peter 4.

  1. What are the common pet themes that sidetrack your church from staying focused on the gospel? What steps must be taken to avoid them?
  2. What steps can an elder take to help manage the expectations of the members for a church leader?
  3. Is the role of an elder a “spiritual gift”? Are there any gifts that are required in order to be an elder?

Apply It

  1. What expectations do people have of the elders in your church? Ask three non-elders. Then ask three elders. Compare and contrast. If these expectations are not the same, find out why?
