1. What are three examples from Scriptures that warn us about the abuse of alcohol?
Noah getting drunk in Genesis 9, Lot’s daughters getting him drunk Gen 19, Jacob giving his farther wine to impair his judgment (Gen 27).
2. What are three Scriptures that seem to speak positively about the use of alcohol?
Jesus turning water into wine, Jesus who drank wine was contrasted with John the Baptist who did not drink wine, Paul encouraging Timothy to take wine for his indigestion.
3. What other elder qualification bears on the use or abuse of alcohol?

  1. How would you describe the use of wine in your life? Has anyone every suggested you may have a problem with alcohol?
  2. What areas of your life may be lacking temperance or self-control that only you know about? What do you intend to do about them?

Apply It

  1. Ask each elder in your church (or at least three other Christian leaders) what their stance on the use of alcohol in the Christian leader’s life. How does this compare to your view? How well do they support their view using Scripture?
