1. What did Paul mean when he said, “Although the outward nature is wasting away, our inner nature is being renewed day by day?”
The outward body is in a process of decay, and there is only a little we can do about it. It is inevitable. But the new man in Christ is refreshed everyday spiritually, growing, learning, changing. This is certainly an exciting life. There should be nothing dull about the Christian life.
2. What is the warning the writer of Hebrews gives to his readers in Hebrews 5:11-12?
They have become dull in understanding the things of God. Instead of maturing, they have become immature. Instead of receiving in-depth knowledge, they need spiritual baby food. Thus, the writer cannot speak to them as mature Christian people. They are in danger of losing their blessings and joy in Christ.
3. What does the speaker mean by the phrase “leadership is influence?”
We are leading people when our instruction and example influences them to change. Merely bearing the title of elder is not enough. Influential elders must be growing, learning, and excited about their faith.

Discuss It

  1. Why do you think the speaker is so encouraged by Christian leaders who are growing and learning into the later years of life?
  2. Why do you think people resist learning new things?
  3. How would you explain the phrase, “becoming dull of hearing” (Heb. 5:11)? What are some characteristics of a person who is in this state?

Apply It

  1. The speaker listed several people who continued to learn and grow in the Christian life throughout their lives. Make a list of some other heroes of the faith who pressed hard into the later years of life, growing diligently in their faith and leadership.
  2. Make a list of people around you who are watching your spiritual growth and being influenced by you.
  3. Contact an older person who is continuing to grow and influence you or others, as the video describes. Ask them what advice they have for you about spiritual growth.
