Paul later refers to false teachers in both of his letters to Timothy and Titus. The “characteristic” of “apt to teach” is important to combat all false teaching.
In 1 Timothy, characteristics listed are for existing elders to evaluate themselves. In Titus, the list is present to determine who is qualified to become an elder.
