"Christians are often blind … because of the profusion of Christian words and references in the modern world. Little do they realize that the Christian faith is like the majestic ruins of an ancient cathedral from which stones are plundered for the construction of countless other buildings. Politicians quarry from its vocabulary, psychiatrists dip into its treasury of practices and symbols, and advertisers mimic the resonance of its acoustics. Each pillager uses just what he finds convenient, but the decisiveness of any distinctive Christian truth has gone." Os Guinness, "The Last Christian on Earth: Uncover the Enemy’s Plot to Undermine the Church." Grand Rapids, MI: Baker, 2014. 194.
"These are matters which have, to be sure, the appearance of wisdom in self-made religion … but are of no value … " (Col 2:23)
Christian leaders must not be guilty of using Christian-sounding but hollow words, sound-bytes that lack any depth of meaning–whether in our prayers, our teaching or our counseling. The church, God’s people, needs men of spiritual depth, who know the Word of God having emersed their minds daily in its soul-stretching truths. The steady diet of God’s Word speaking into the soul will help a person sniff out theological error as well as superficial crowd-pleasing words. What’s in your Bible reading schedule for today?
